Description
Woman in Red presents a figure in red-orange clothing turning partly away from the viewer in a very narrow composition. A hand or sleeve rises near her face while large sweeping folds give the drapery a substantial presence. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the garment central to the encounter without supplying a securely named dramatic role, allowing the figure’s presentation to carry the image.
Dating to the late eighteenth century, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It belongs to Shunshō’s exploration of the human figure within the visual culture of Edo-period Japan. The image’s interest can rest in that direct encounter, where a succinct title leaves room for looking without requiring an unsupported interpretation of the woman’s status, thoughts or circumstances.
