Description
Ichikawa Danzō IV appears in the role of a samurai in Katsukawa Shunshō’s print, joining the performer to a recognizable warrior identity. The pale-robed samurai reaches a hand and sword outward to the right beside an upright post against a dark background. The extended action gives the figure a strong direction, making the character’s presence feel engaged with a space beyond the immediate body.
Created around 1785, the nishiki-e work uses ink and color on paper. Shunshō gives a temporary stage appearance a form that can be encountered beyond the live performance. The image’s appeal lies in the meeting of the actor’s public identity and the assumed bearing of a samurai. The role supplies a dramatic frame, while Danzō’s presence makes it specific, preserving the human interpretation behind an outward appearance of rank.
