Description
Beauties under an Umbrella brings two women in long robes together in a very narrow composition, with a large zone of inscription above them. The shared shelter ties their separate figures together, giving their gathering a simple visual focus. Katsukawa Shunshō brings human presence, carried object and written space into relation without supplying an invented story about the occasion.
The late-eighteenth-century color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its subject belongs to Shunshō’s broader interest in figures beyond the identities of individual theatrical performers. The image invites attention to the relationship between people and a familiar object, where a simple act of gathering can create a distinct composition without requiring a dramatic or symbolic explanation.
