Description
Katsukawa Shunshō presents Segawa Tomisaburō’s Musume Dōjōji role as an elegant dancer beneath flowering cherry branches. Long orange and pale patterned robes carry the figure’s movement downward, while tall red-orange headwear adds an upward accent. The costume and blossoming canopy make the role’s appearance distinct, preserving an expressive stage presence rather than an ordinary standing likeness.
Dated February 1774, this ink-and-color woodblock print preserves a performance identity in a lasting form. The character and play names give the portrait a precise connection without requiring every part of the drama to be retold. Shunshō’s image allows the viewer to encounter a particular actor as someone else. Its human interest lies in that deliberate transformation, where individuality and theatrical persona are visible together.
