Description
Nakamura Nakazō moves forward in a dark red robe patterned with many white circles, with pale chest visible and a railing behind him. The narrow sheet gives the figure’s forward movement a strong vertical setting. Katsukawa Shunshō portrays the actor as a kyōkaku, making an assertive character type particular through the named performer’s appearance.
Dating to around 1777, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its theatrical subject becomes a lasting image that can be revisited outside the unfolding performance. The work invites attention to how a recognized character type becomes individual through its portrayal, without requiring a speculative account of a play or specific episode that the documented title does not securely identify.
