Description
Katsukawa Shunshō gives Ichikawa Danzō III’s court-noble role an expansive red costume with a huge white geometric motif. The garment dominates the figure, while an arm raised toward the face provides a smaller, concentrated gesture. The contrast between the costume’s breadth and the hand’s position turns formal appearance into a distinct theatrical image.
Dated 1768, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print from Edo-period Japan. Its subject depends on the meeting of known performer and assumed status. Shunshō preserves that encounter in a form that can be seen after the stage appearance has passed. The portrait’s interest lies in how an actor’s presence becomes legible as someone of another world, while the title keeps the human performer and the character type distinct.
