Description
Nakamura Nakazō and Ichikawa Raizō II confront one another with sword and lance. One actor raises an arm and blade across the upper space while the other crouches below, their pale patterned robes joining a vigorous arrangement. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves the opposed performers in a particular theatrical encounter, where gesture and weapon give the relationship its immediate energy.
The 1769 color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper to give that meeting a lasting form. Seen apart from the unfolding drama, the scene invites attention to the contrast between the performers and the objects they carry. Its appeal comes from the shared encounter, allowing the documented sword-and-lance confrontation to remain vivid without an invented explanation of the conflict’s causes or outcome.
