Description
A scene from a drama is the subject of Katsukawa Shunshō’s print, placing the pictured encounter within a world of performed action. Two actors occupy a broad scene, one seated or crouched lower at the left in a red geometric costume and another standing higher to the right beside a diagonal blade. Their contrasting positions give the encounter a clear direction, making the drama visible through the relationship between the figures.
The nishiki-e work was printed with ink and color on paper during Shunshō’s activity in Edo-period Japan. The medium gives a passing stage scene a lasting presence, inviting a look at something originally encountered in time. Its interest lies in that change of pace: performance becomes an image, and the viewer can attend to the relationships within a single moment. The scene retains the suggestion of a wider drama while allowing its pictured encounter to stand on its own.
