Description

In Ōtani Hiroemon III as a Fish Peddler, Katsukawa Shunshō gives the standing figure a dark green upper robe and striped lower garment. A carrying pole and bundle occupy the side of the body, making the working role visible through its equipment. The pale setting lets these contrasting forms remain clear, turning an ordinary occupation into a distinctive theatrical appearance.

The ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to the Edo period, without a securely established creation year in the available record. Its subject suggests how theater could make common occupations part of a performer’s public identity. Shunshō preserves that transformation in a compact printed form. The image’s human interest lies in the meeting between a known actor and a role associated with daily work, rather than in an invented account of the surrounding drama.
