Description
In Danjūrō V as Kakogawa Honzō, Katsukawa Shunshō presents a solitary actor beneath a tall woven komusō hat. Long, multicolored robes follow the standing body, and a slender flute rests in the hand. A narrow landscape band behind the figure provides a setting without diluting the costume’s distinctive silhouette. The religious appearance belongs to a performed disguise rather than an ordinary portrait of a monk.
Printed in ink and color on paper during the Edo period, the work has no securely supplied creation date. Its interest lies in the relation between person and disguise: Honzō’s appearance is made visible through Danjūrō’s performance. Shunshō keeps the role’s particular objects central without requiring an invented explanation of the full play. The portrait preserves the way a theatrical character can be recognized through a few carefully chosen signs.
