Description
Ichikawa Danjuro I and Nakamura Denkuro II are the named actors in this pairing of a higher, upright figure in pale robes with a lower, seated figure in richly red-patterned clothing. The formal interior gives their contrasting positions a shared setting. The museum identifies the actors as Ichikawa Danjūrō I and Nakamura Denkurō II, while leaving their roles unnamed, so the visible relationship can be appreciated without inventing a precise dramatic episode.
The work was printed in ink and color on paper during the Edo period. The named actors’ lifetimes do not overlap, so the image should not be understood automatically as a record of a performance they gave together. Shunshō’s design instead preserves a pairing whose precise historical basis remains uncertain. The portrait invites attention to the figures as represented, while allowing their recorded identities and the unanswered chronology to remain distinct from an invented stage event.
