Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears in Shibaraku, wearing an enormous red ceremonial robe marked by a large angular white crest. The upright head and upward-reaching sword give the expansive costume a strong vertical accent before a formal wall. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the named performer’s portrayal emphatic through the relationship between body, garment and weapon.
The color woodblock print dates to around 1779 and uses ink and color on paper. It gives a stage portrayal a lasting form beyond the moment of performance, allowing the actor’s presentation to be considered at a different pace. The work’s interest lies in the specific association of performer and role, without requiring an invented episode to extend what the documented identity supplies.
