Description
Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Albrecht Dürer presents the saint as a slender, crowned figure turned in profile. She holds a long sword before her, while the folds of her gown descend in a series of delicate, closely observed lines. With little surrounding detail, the figure’s poised stance and elaborate drapery become the focus of the drawing.
Executed in pen and brown ink, the work has the immediacy of a study rather than the dense finish of an engraving. Fine contours define the face, crown and hands, and more concentrated hatching gives weight to the clothing. The restrained composition invites attention to Dürer’s ability to suggest both character and movement with economical marks.
