Description
A Moroccan couple reclines on terrace carpets in Eugène Delacroix’s watercolor, with a blue-robed man at the left and a pale-clad woman nearer the center and right. Low buildings and trees extend beneath the sky behind them. The relaxed bodies and the surrounding place give the terrace a quiet, inhabited character rather than a formal portrait setting.
Made in 1832, the drawing uses watercolor over traces of graphite. The combination allows a lightly established structure to support the colored image without becoming its sole emphasis. Delacroix’s subject invites attention to an ordinary interval rather than a grand historical event. Its interest lies in the connection between company and place, where a small outdoor space can carry the experience of living together and give familiar human proximity a distinctive atmosphere.
