Description
Eugène Delacroix presents the poet Mathurin Régnier beside a table, dressed in a blue doublet and red-brown breeches. Furniture and a stool occupy the lower center, while a dark hanging garment gives weight to the right side. The figure’s standing, slightly leaning position connects his presence with the room, making costume and surroundings part of the portrait’s character.
Made around 1846, the work combines watercolor and gouache over traces of graphite on wove paper. Delacroix’s image represents an earlier literary figure rather than a contemporary sitter, giving the portrait a historical dimension. Blue clothing and warmer lower garments distinguish the body within the furnished setting. The work joins an individual identity with the tangible forms of dress and interior space, allowing the poet to appear as a person inhabiting a room.
