Description

In A Lion and a Tiger, Fighting, Eugène Delacroix compresses the animals’ struggle into a small, intertwined group at the center of a pale sheet. Darker marks around the mane contrast with lighter surrounding lines, while claws and limbs help establish the animals’ close struggle. The open space gives the compact encounter greater force, leaving little to distract from the twisting bodies.

Made around 1854, the study is a graphite drawing on wove paper. Delacroix uses a limited area to explore the mechanics and intensity of animal combat, making a changing contour carry much of the scene’s energy. The drawing retains an immediate, investigative quality rather than a fully developed landscape. Its appeal lies in the relation between economy and movement, as a few concentrated marks make two powerful animals seem inseparable within the struggle.
