Description
The Four Horsemen by Albrecht Dürer compresses the terror of the Apocalypse into a sweeping charge. Riders bearing a bow, sword and scales surge together across the image, while the gaunt figure of Death presses forward below them. The horses’ overlapping bodies and the strong diagonal movement leave little room for escape among the fallen figures in their path.
This 1498 woodcut is part of Dürer’s illustrations for Revelation. An angel hovers above the riders, and a monstrous mouth opens at the lower left, intensifying the sense of upheaval. Dense black lines alternate with flashes of open ground, making the scene both intricate and immediately legible. Its relentless momentum gives the biblical vision an unforgettable visual form.
