Description
The Death of the Virgin by Albrecht Dürer places a solemn gathering around a canopied bed. Figures kneel, read and stand in close attendance, their varied gestures conveying prayer and concern. A tall cross rises beside the bed, while curtains and the arched ceiling frame the scene with the dignity of a carefully arranged interior.
Created in 1510 for The Life of the Virgin, the woodcut finds its emotional force in shared attention rather than outward drama. Dürer’s lines describe the weight of drapery, the patterned architecture and the individual faces within the group. The crowded room remains clearly organized, leading the eye toward the reclining Virgin and the quiet acts of devotion surrounding her.
