Description
Women and children gather persimmons around a branching tree, with a ladder and a raised figure helping carry the activity upward. A patterned fence organizes the space around the group. Kitagawa Utamaro makes seasonal gathering a shared encounter, allowing different ages and positions to contribute to a scene whose interest lies in participation rather than an isolated portrait.
Dating to around 1802–4, the work is a triptych of woodblock prints in ink and color on paper. The multi-sheet arrangement gives the subject room to develop across related parts. Its interest lies in preserving an activity whose purpose is practical but whose visual presence can be enjoyed at another pace, making the gathering of fruit a lasting human scene beyond the season itself.
