Description

This original mixed-media portrait by Isagani depicts a Filipino man in a broad-brimmed hat holding a rooster, with a cigarette resting at his lips. Fine, dark lines define his weathered face and the bird’s alert profile, while transparent-looking sepia washes soften the clothing and leave much of the pale background open. The close grouping of man and bird gives the composition an intimate, observant character.

Signed Isagani and dated ’73 at the lower left, the 1973 portrait balances precise facial detail with loose, flowing passages of brown. A textured fabric mat, narrow dark inner border and molded brown wood frame extend its warm, restrained palette. The subject and economical handling of line make it a distinctive vintage figurative work.
