Description

Old Man with Beard, Fur Cap, and Velvet Cloak is an etching by Rembrandt van Rijn, dated about 1631. A bearded figure in a broad fur cap faces the viewer, his hands gathered beneath the heavy folds of his cloak. Fine etched lines give the face and beard a gentle light against the dark, densely worked clothing.

This Metropolitan Museum of Art impression is identified as the second state. Its warm paper tone and small age marks remain visible around the portrait, preserving the character of this particular impression of Old Man with Beard, Fur Cap, and Velvet Cloak.
