Description
Pablo Picasso’s Head of a Sleeping Woman closes the eyes of a sharply constructed face beneath surrounding drapery. Yellow and dark brown planes divide the head, while repeated lines animate the cloth and background. The lowered expression contrasts with the force of the angular drawing.
The work is a study for Nude with Drapery, and its concentrated scale makes the transformation of the face especially clear. Picasso uses slanting edges and patterned marks to suggest volume without conventional softness. Sleep becomes a still center within a surface whose lines remain active and insistent.
