Description

Tauromaquia Plate 13 by Francisco Goya sets a mounted knight against the sudden force of a charging bull. The rider’s elaborate costume, plumed hat and upright bearing contrast with the animal’s lowered head and outstretched legs. His horse turns into the encounter, creating a lively crossing of bodies in the otherwise open ring.

Made in 1816 for La Tauromaquia, the image depicts the breaking of short spears without assistants. Goya balances the dark bull against the pale horse and rider, using etched lines to give each a distinct texture. A few spectators lean over the barrier above, their small faces and gestures drawing attention to the risk unfolding in the foreground.
