Description
Tauromaquia Plate 30 by Francisco Goya presents Pedro Romero in a moment of deliberate concentration. With his feet planted wide and his sword extended, the matador faces a halted bull across a narrow interval of open ground. The lowered cape and the animal’s heavy stance give the encounter a measured, expectant rhythm.
Created in 1816 for La Tauromaquia, the scene draws its drama from restraint. Goya places the principal figures beneath a broad, lightly worked arena wall, while a handful of spectators lean forward above it. The contrast between Romero’s dark costume and the bull’s mottled body gives each a strong presence, allowing posture and small gestures to carry the tension.
