Description

In What Is the Use of a Cup?, Francisco Goya depicts a woman offering aid to exhausted sufferers on barren ground. A reclining figure lies at the center, with a child’s body across her knees, while an older woman watches the helper with anguish. The small cup and the women’s concentrated gestures stand out against a spare, grainy setting that offers no distraction from their need.

Plate 59 of The Disasters of War questions the adequacy of a compassionate act without denying its value. In a famine, the offering is painfully small beside the scale of suffering. Goya keeps the scene intimate, replacing crowds and military action with an encounter between women. The title voices the gap between intention and means, leaving the viewer to consider both the helper’s humanity and the conditions that make her effort insufficient.
