Description
Skating before the St. George’s Gate, Antwerp turns a frozen moat into a lively public scene. The arched gate and sloping city wall establish the setting, while skaters balance, fall and gather across the ice below. Heavier cloaked figures mingle with more active bodies, and a crowd fills the farther space. A familiar place is transformed by winter and by the temporary activity taking place before it.
Frans Huys engraved the scene around 1558 after a design by Pieter Bruegel the Elder; Hieronymus Cock published it. The print brings a close attention to human behavior into contact with the wider setting. Rather than centering on one heroic figure, it gives the crowd’s individual movements a collective rhythm. Winter appears as a lived experience, with the pleasures and uncertainties of skating supplying the scene’s distinctive energy.
