Description
Four small portraits share a pale sheet in Albert Bierstadt’s studies of Native American leaders at Fort Laramie. Three heads appear above a fourth, with side profiles and differently colored wraps giving each subject a distinct presence. The surrounding open paper keeps attention close to the faces, making the individuals more important than a panoramic view of the place where they were encountered.
Made around 1859 in oil and graphite on paper, the sheet combines painted color with drawn observation. Names inscribed beneath the portraits identify the leaders individually, adding a specific human connection to the studies. Their compact arrangement lets the viewer compare the artist’s attention to each face without treating them as interchangeable figures. The page records people met during Bierstadt’s western journey, retaining the immediacy of a working study while giving its subjects a concentrated visual importance.
