Description
The Annunciation by Paolo Veronese and his workshop fills an intimate interior with an extraordinary arrival. Gabriel appears at the left among clouds, raising an arm beside the white lilies, while Mary kneels at the right. Above her, a bright dove marks the upper part of the composition. Drapery, colored garments and a tiled floor give the encounter a richly furnished setting rather than an abstract celestial space.
Painted around 1580 in oil on canvas, the scene represents the angel’s announcement that Mary would bear Christ. The Cleveland Museum of Art emphasizes the closeness of the two figures and the sense of a private interior. Their contrasting positions hold the composition in balance: the arriving messenger introduces movement, while the kneeling Virgin gives the moment a still, receptive center.
