Description

The Lake of Zug shows a Swiss mountain lake opening toward high peaks, sunrise appearing behind the town of Arth between the Rossberg and Mythen. J. M. W. Turner connects this expansive setting with people at the water’s edge, where women enter the lake and villagers prepare boats. The landscape holds human activity within a much broader atmosphere, making light and distance central to the encounter.

Created in 1843, the watercolor layers dilute washes, drier color and bodycolor over graphite, with scraping revealing the white paper beneath. Those changes of surface help suggest mist and reflection without giving every form a hard edge. Turner brings the mountain lake into a luminous, shifting balance, allowing the small foreground activities to remain distinct while the surrounding peaks and water share the scene’s radiant space.
