Description
Japanese artist Tsune Kato Original Oil Portrait on canvas – 1949, depicting a young girl with a neatly cut brown bob with straight bangs and direct, engaging gaze. Wearing a softly rendered cream-colored blouse with a rounded collar, the sitter emerges against a restrained background of pale blue, green, and warm golden tones.
Kato’s careful handling of the child’s face and eyes contrasts with the looser, more impressionistic treatment of her clothing and background. The resulting portrait has both an intimate personal quality and the quiet formality associated with mid-20th-century commissioned portraiture.
Signed “Tsune Kato” and dated 1949 at lower left. The painting remains mounted on its original wooden stretcher and is presented in an ornate period gilt composition frame with floral and foliate relief decoration.
