Description
A church spire rises above hillside buildings in Ville de Thun, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Thomas Hodgetts. Woodland frames the left foreground, while the river opens at the lower right. The town’s clustered vertical forms lead the eye upward from the water, connecting an inhabited place to the surrounding contours of its landscape.
Published on January 1, 1816, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. This later state comes from the same design as earlier impressions, preserving a distinction in printed history rather than a different town. Turner’s design and Hodgetts’s tonal work give the view a lasting material form. Its interest lies in the relation between a named settlement and its surroundings, allowing one particular landscape to be encountered through the connection of human structures and the larger world around them.
