Description

Eugène Delacroix locks Theseus and the centaur Eurytus into a close struggle, with the human figure high at the left and the horse’s body extending to the right. The interwoven forms make action visible through opposing directions, turning a compact group into an energetic encounter. Bodies carry the composition without needing a broad narrative setting around them.

Dated 1825, the lithograph derives from Delacroix’s study of a Parthenon metope in the British Museum during his visit to London. The print reverses his drawn record of the sculptural subject, translating relief into a graphic image. Delacroix’s attention to the earlier work concentrates on the force and organization of its bodies. The result connects a classical object with a new printed form, preserving the tension of the encounter across different media.
