Description

A patient lies within a dark hospital interior in Eugène Delacroix’s print, with an attendant nearby and a large pale drapery above to the right. The contrast between sheltered bodies and enclosing shadow gives the scene an atmosphere distinct from the outward spectacle of battle. Military life is approached through vulnerability and the presence of another person beside the bed.

Made by 1828 or earlier, the aquatint was printed in black ink on heavy wove paper. Delacroix gives the interior a tonal printed form, bringing an enclosed setting into the intimate scale of a work on paper. The subject’s interest lies in the significance granted to a place of care rather than action. Its appeal rests in that change of attention, where the consequences of conflict can become more compelling than its outward display.
