Description

In Eugène Delacroix’s scene of a lioness mauling an Arab man, the human figure lies toward the left as the animal presses in from the center and right. Her lowered head brings the attack into close proximity with his body, concentrating the encounter within a compact group. The arrangement leaves little distance between the two, making contact the scene’s dominant force.

Dated 1849, the work combines soft-ground etching and roulette on chine collé. Delacroix gives the violent subject its intensity through the relationship of bodies rather than an expansive setting. The man’s recumbent position contrasts with the animal’s pressing movement, establishing an unequal encounter that remains visually immediate. The print asks the eye to follow intertwined contours, where a small group of forms can carry a dramatic sense of danger and physical vulnerability.
