Description
Eugène Delacroix gives Baron Schwiter a dark, concentrated presence in a bust portrait topped by a tall hat. A long neckcloth adds another substantial form below the face, making dress central to the sitter’s outline. The restricted view keeps attention on the head and upper body, allowing a few strong shapes to establish a distinctive individual likeness.
Dated 1826, the lithograph portrays Louis Auguste Schwiter through a close encounter rather than an expansive view of his surroundings. Delacroix balances the hat’s upper weight with the clothing below, giving the face a clear place within the dark arrangement. The print’s interest lies in that concentration: an individual can be suggested through bearing, proportion and the choice of visible garments. The result remains compact, but its limited field gives the sitter a firm pictorial presence.
