Description

In The Ghost on the Terrace, Eugène Delacroix places the armored apparition at the left as Hamlet recoils toward the right beneath a dark sky. The distance and opposing movements between the figures make the encounter uneasy, joining an imposing supernatural presence with the prince’s startled response. The terrace becomes a space of revelation, where a meeting between father and son carries an extraordinary weight.

Dated 1843, the lithograph belongs to Delacroix’s Hamlet series and credits Villain as lithographer. The ghost reveals the uncle’s murder and demands revenge, transforming grief into an obligation that shapes the drama. Delacroix gives the scene its force through the relationship between the two bodies, letting posture express the impact of the revelation. The print makes Shakespeare’s supernatural episode humanly immediate, concentrating recognition, shock and expectation within one charged encounter.
