Description

Hamlet holds a recorder amid a courtly group while a man at the right gestures toward him. Eugène Delacroix brings the named encounter with Guildenstern into a shared human setting, where the instrument gives the prince’s presence a particular focus. The figures’ differing positions turn the literary subject into a concentrated scene rather than separate portraits of the characters.

Dating to 1834–43, the lithograph belongs to Delacroix’s Hamlet project. It gives an unfolding play a lasting visual form, allowing the relationship between characters to be regarded at another pace. The image’s interest lies in that concentration, where a particular meeting becomes a continuing encounter through the printed surface and where a named dramatic pairing can retain a close human presence apart from the full performance.
