Description

In Lion of the Atlas Mountains, a lion lies at a cave opening, its head close at the left while a large arched rock rises at the right. Eugène Delacroix gives the animal a particular resting place rather than an action-filled scene. The lithograph connects the lion of the Atlas Mountains with its immediate surroundings, allowing creature and enclosing stone to share the encounter’s strong visual presence.

Dating to 1829–30, the lithograph gives the animal a continuing graphic presence. The subject makes the image a close encounter with a living form, where the printed surface allows attention to return beyond the brevity of an observation. Its interest lies in that concentration, allowing the lion to remain a particular creature rather than replacing it with an elaborate symbolic narrative or a broad description of the landscape named in the title.
