Description
Polonius and Hamlet stand close, the older man bending toward the prince in a compact encounter. Eugène Delacroix gives Shakespeare’s named pair a particular relationship through their differing positions rather than treating them as separate likenesses. The scene invites attention to proximity and gesture, allowing the two characters’ meeting to remain central within the printed composition.
Dating to 1834–43, the lithograph belongs to Delacroix’s Hamlet illustrations. It gives an unfolding drama a continuing visual form, allowing the viewer to regard a particular encounter at another pace. The image’s interest lies in that concentration, where the figures named by the subject can remain engaging apart from a complete performance and where the printed surface preserves a moment of their shared dramatic world.
