Description
Eugène Delacroix places a nursing tigress low in the foreground as a male tiger descends toward her from the upper right. The cubs remain close beneath the larger animals, giving the conflict another scale and a vulnerable center. A wooded lair surrounds the group, making the encounter feel enclosed within the rough forms of its natural setting.
Dated 1853, the work is a wood engraving associated with Le Magasin Pittoresque. Delacroix joins care and aggression within one compact design, contrasting the young animals’ dependence with the force of the descending attacker. The changing directions of the adults make the scene active, while the cubs hold attention near the ground. The image turns an animal encounter into a sharply organized drama, where bodies, movement and surrounding growth together establish the danger.
