Description
Édouard Manet’s Cats gathers several separate studies on one sheet rather than placing the animals in a continuous setting. A dark curled silhouette at the left contrasts with a lighter sleeping cat low at the right, while another, more loosely drawn study appears above. Their differing positions and degrees of finish make the page feel like an active exploration of feline form.
The etched design dates to 1868–69; this impression was published in the 1905 Strölin edition. Dense black passages, fine outlines, and open paper give the familiar animal several distinct graphic lives. Manet finds variety within its compact shapes, showing how a curve of back or tail can carry both weight and character. The sheet’s charm comes from observation as much as from its playful contrasts.
