Description

A raven spreads its wings across the pale horizontal field of Édouard Manet’s lithograph, its dark silhouette giving the bird an immediate graphic force. The winged form appears suspended against the surrounding openness. Rather than describing a complete setting, Manet concentrates attention on the creature itself, making its unmistakable presence sufficient to introduce a larger imaginative world.

Created in 1875 as an ex libris for Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, the image belongs to Manet’s collaboration with the poem’s French translator, Stéphane Mallarmé. The lithograph brings a literary subject into a concise visual form, allowing the bird to stand apart from the poem’s individual episodes. Its appeal lies in the contrast between expansive wings and the spare page, where a single dark shape can suggest movement, mystery and the unsettling power of the remembered text.
