Description

A woman reclines against a dark cushion in Édouard Manet’s The Convalescent, her pale face framed by a head covering. Dark hatching surrounds the paler passages of her clothing. The close view gives Suzanne Manet’s resting presence an intimate character, making recovery a human condition encountered through stillness rather than a dramatic narrative.

The print combines etching, drypoint and aquatint in brown ink. Its probable date around 1879–81 places it among Manet’s later works, though the dating remains approximate. The layered processes give the sitter a material presence through line and tone, allowing an intimate subject to remain substantial. The portrait’s interest lies in the closeness of the encounter, where the person named in the title can sustain attention beyond the temporary condition through which she is introduced.
