Description
A reclining nude occupies the right side of Olympia in this wood engraving by Moller after Édouard Manet, with her head at the right and legs extending left. A maid holds a bouquet on the opposite side. The arrangement reverses the familiar painted composition, giving its closely connected figures another graphic presence rather than simply copying the painting’s direction.
Issued in 1902, the wood engraving dates from after Manet’s lifetime. Its cut marks and contrasts translate a painted subject into a different material language, allowing the familiar scene to be encountered through the structure of a printed surface. The work’s appeal lies in that transformation, where an established composition can remain recognizable while acquiring another graphic character. The image offers a close encounter with a design carried forward through the work of a separate engraver.
