Description

A guitarist stands near the center of this dark print, with a seated woman holding an infant at the right and a boy raising a vessel behind her. The landscape behind gives the group a wider setting while their different positions keep the human figures distinct. Manet connects music, company and costume within a compact encounter rather than making any one person an isolated portrait.

Dated 1862, The Gypsies is an etching represented in its final state on blue laid paper. The historical title is retained as the name of the artwork rather than treated as proof of particular identities or a personal history for its figures. The print’s visual interest lies in the balance of the upright guitarist with the lower seated forms. Darker passages and close arrangement give the group weight within the limited field of the sheet.
