Description
Édouard Manet’s The Spanish Singer presents a seated musician with a broad-brimmed hat and a guitar across his lap. The instrument’s neck reaches to the right, balancing the spread of the figure and the low shapes of bench and feet. The open surrounding ground allows the musician’s posture and the guitar’s familiar form to establish the scene.
Dating from 1861–62, the etching uses fine lines and bitten tone to shift between light, sketchlike passages and more substantial accents. Manet gives the subject character through its arrangement rather than through crowded scenery. The hat, seated body, and instrument become a compact study of performance, holding the musician in a moment that suggests sound while remaining attentive to the still, graphic structure of the print.
