Description

Édouard Manet’s The Infanta Marguerita revisits a royal subject after Velázquez. The young girl’s pale, elaborate dress spreads around the figure, giving the small portrait a formal structure that contrasts with her youthful face. Interior details remain lightly suggested, so the clothing and the child’s presence carry the image rather than an imposing architectural setting.

Manet created the etching around 1861–62; this impression belongs to the 1905 Strölin edition. Translating the painted subject into lines and hatching changes its texture while preserving the ceremonial character of the portrait. The broad dress becomes a pattern of light paper and delicate marks, allowing Manet’s graphic interpretation to acknowledge Velázquez while drawing fresh attention to the contrast between the child and the role her costume represents.
