Description
Marine sets sailing vessels against a lively expanse of water. Billowing sails rise at the left and center, while the sea is broken into strongly contrasted lines and patches of tone. A distant steamer and its long trail of smoke introduce another horizontal movement, carrying the eye beyond the nearer boats toward the horizon.
Édouard Manet made the etching and aquatint in 1865–66. The two techniques let fine rigging and wave patterns meet larger tonal masses, giving the scene both activity and graphic clarity. Rather than smoothing the water into a continuous surface, Manet leaves its marks restless and distinct. The image draws energy from these competing rhythms: upright sails, shifting waves, and the distant smoke each animate a different part of the maritime space.
