Description

Dark sails rise above blue-green water in Manet’s Boats at Berck-sur-Mer, with white strokes marking the movement of the waves. Larger vessels occupy the middle ground, while smaller forms appear along the high horizon beneath a gray sky. The repeated boats give the open seascape several points of attention without closing off the distance around them.

Painted in 1873 in oil on fabric, the work belongs to Manet’s stay at Berck-sur-Mer near Boulogne. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes the rapid handling of sails and the slight curve of the horizon, which helps the small painting suggest an extensive space. Manet brings water, wind and vessels into a lively surface rather than a rigid inventory of ships. Its appeal lies in how quick, distinct marks can make a broad marine prospect feel active and immediate.
