Description
Lola de Valence stands in an elaborate Spanish dress in Édouard Manet’s etching, holding a closed fan at the left. Bows and the shorter, richly detailed skirt give the full-length figure a distinctive silhouette. A cast shadow extends across the floor at the right, making her presence substantial against the dark background while preserving the graphic liveliness of her costume.
Created in 1862, the work combines etching and aquatint. The different processes give the subject both linear structure and a tonal setting, allowing a printed image to carry a presence associated with Manet’s painted work as well. Its interest lies in the concentration of the encounter, where one figure can become substantial through contrast and the relationship to surrounding space. The print offers its own material version of the subject rather than merely standing in for a painting.
